How libraries can improve information access and knowledge in society
Libraries are democratic spaces where members of society can benefit from when in need of any information. The role of the library does not end there, the librarian does not need to wait in their brick and mortar establishments for patrons with an information query, but they should come out and become proactive social workers. We are writing this post after we had a successful out day at a local library in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
The librarian organised a training workshop to teach its loyal clients basic first aid training. This idea was inspired due to a common problem in Zimbabwe where most average citizens have no basic first aid training, in an environment where multiple sources of energy are being used, people suffocate, lose consciousness and even die before they get to the hospital. So the library in this instance went out to the community and brought the users on one hand and the health workers on the other to work together for a greater common good.
A simple equation can explain the relation
1.Health Workers (Rich with first aid information)
2.Patrons and members of society in need of basic first aid training
3. Library bridges the gap between these two players ensures information is shared effectively.
The information shared here will be cascaded down to other members of the public and save lives which may, otherwise be lost due to lack of knowledge of first aid training.
We were delighted to be part of this great initiative and we were honored to present to the young readers about career choices. In this volatile environment, we need to upskill and have multiple streams of income, but prior market research is vital and crucial for start ups. We need to be on the constant look out for new opportunities and technologies that will enhance our lives for the greater good.😊
